The Big 5: Pride of Africa
With Christmas just around the corner, the South African Mint has some great gift ideas to help you get that perfect gift.
From R795
The African leopard is the most secretive and arguably the most beautiful of the big cats. Following the elephant, the lion, and the rhino collectable coins, the leopard is the penultimate collectable coin in the exciting Big 5 series from the South African Mint.
The leopard is a symbol of nobility and courage. It is an accomplished hunter, using stealth and strength to its advantage. A leopard can weigh up to 96kg, yet they have been known to haul prey weighing up to 125kg into trees.
The Big 5 leopard coins’ design gives an impressively detailed depiction of the elusive wild cat. The reverse of the coin features two halves of the face of a leopard and when two coins are placed next to each other, the full face of a leopard is formed. The obverse of the coins features a breath-taking side view of the leopard, with its characteristic spots indented in the metal.
In celebration of Africa’s unique natural heritage, strength, and beauty, the Big 5 coin series sees a new animal every six months. Enquire in-store or online for more in this popular coin series, available in silver, gold, and platinum.

South African Inventions: Retinal Cryoprobe
From R595
South Africa has a long and proud history of innovations, from the heart transplant to polymer putty that went to the moon. This year, the South African Inventions sterling-silver R2 Crown and 2½ Tickey coin series highlight the Retinal Cryoprobe.
In 1965, while working at Soweto’s Baragwanath Hospital, Dr. Selig Percy Amoils unveiled the Retinal Cryoprobe, the world’s first surgical tool that made retinal and cataract surgery simple and safe by using extreme cold. The cryoprobe is a pen-like instrument used to deliver an extremely cold liquid gas to unwanted tissue (such as a cataract), allowing it to be removed with accuracy and ease.
The complete coin set is made up of an R2 crown coin, featuring the anatomy of an eye on the reverse, while the smaller 2½c tickey coin depicts a gloved hand holding the retinal cryoprobe. When the tickey is placed on top of the crown in the designated ‘eye area’, the surgical procedure of the cryoprobe removing a cataract, is recreated.

Krugerrand: A Modern-Day Classic
From R1295
Struck for the first time on 3 July 1967, with the aim of availing gold to more South Africans, this legendary coin is now even more accessible in silver. The original Krugerrand was a 1oz gold coin, which was marketed as an investment tool. Today, the original investment-grade bullion gold Krugerrand is available in four sizes: 1oz, 1/1oz, 1/4oz and 1/10oz.
In addition to the bullion, we boast a wide range of meticulously-crated collectable Krugerrand coins ranging in size from 2oz to 1/50oz in the gold range. In the silver range, there is no better collectable coin than the 2oz and 1oz silver Krugerrand coins.
